I wasn't feeling well this morning and so I decided not to go on the excursion. The others left on a sampan at 8am and returned at about 12 noon. The excursion went to Evergreen Island and included a visit to a silk factory.
During the visit, they had a talk from a man who fought for South Vietnam during the war. After the victory by the North, he had to destroy all his identity papers and was confined to a re-education camp. He was naturally reluctant today to say anything critical of the government.
While we were having our buffet lunch, the ship set sail for the Cambodian border. At 3pm we attended a half hour talk about Cambodia. By this time, the ship had dropped anchor in the middle of the river about 200m short of the Cambodian border. We were told that Cambodian officials would come on board to check our passports.
The tour director's daily port talk was at 5:45pm - earlier than usual - and was held on the top deck. This was because there was live entertainment at 6pm from a dancing troupe in brightly coloured outfits. It was a traditional lion dance.
Dinner at 7pm was the "Farewell Vietnam Dinner". While we were having dinner, the ship set sail on the 100km journey to Phnom Penh.
